Coelenterate: An Outdated Term for Cnidarians
Coelenterate is an outdated term that was previously used to describe a group of animals that are now known as cnidarians. Cnidarians include jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, and other related animals. The name "coelenterate" comes from the Greek words "koilos," meaning "hollow," and "enteron," meaning "intestine." This name was chosen because the digestive system of these animals is typically located in a hollow body cavity. However, this term is no longer widely used in modern biology, and has been largely replaced by the term "cnidarian."
