Controlling Kermes Scale Infestations on Oak Trees
Kermes is a type of scale insect that is commonly found on oak trees, particularly in the Mediterranean region. The kermes scale (Kermes species) is a small, armored insect that feeds on the sap of the tree, and can cause significant damage to the tree's foliage and growth.
Kermes scales are typically found in clusters on the underside of the tree's leaves, and can be recognized by their small size (about 1-2 mm in length), oval shape, and hard, waxy exoskeleton. They are usually green or brown in color, and may be covered in a white, cottony substance called meal.
Kermes scales can be controlled using insecticides, but this method is not always effective and can have negative environmental impacts. Biological control methods, such as introducing natural predators of the scale insects, can also be used to manage kermes infestations.
