Kinnelon is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,347, reflecting an increase of 195 (+2.0%) from the 10,152 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 681 (+7.2%) from the 9,471 counted in the 1990 Census.
Kinnelon was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 22, 1922, from portions of Pequannock Township and Pompton Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 2, 1922. The name Kinnelon is derived from the name of a local creek, which in turn is derived from the Lenape Native American word "kinnel", meaning "where there are rocks".
Kinnelon is located in the western part of Morris County, bordering the towns of Pequannock Township to the east and Pompton Township to the south. The borough is situated in the High Point region of New Jersey, which is known for its rolling hills and scenic views. Kinnelon is approximately 30 miles west of New York City and is accessible via Interstate 287 and U.S. Route 46.
