## History

The town was first settled in 1783 as part of the Massachusetts Western Reserve. It was originally called "Buckfield No. 2" and was separated from Buckfield, Maine, by the town of Hebron. In 1803, the town was incorporated as Dixfield, named after Colonel Thomas Dix, a landowner and Revolutionary War veteran.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dixfield was a major center for the production of woolen textiles, with several mills operating in the town. However, like many other New England towns that relied heavily on manufacturing, Dixfield experienced significant economic decline in the mid-20th century as industries moved elsewhere. Today, the town is largely residential and serves as a bedroom community for nearby cities such as Lewiston and Auburn.

Dixfield is home to several notable landmarks, including the Dixfield Congregational Church, which was built in 1836 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Dixfield Historical Society Museum, which features exhibits on the town's history and industry.
