Discover the Rare and Fragrant Calycanthaceae Family of Plants in Hawaii
Calycanthaceae is a family of flowering plants that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The family was first described by botanist John Kunkel Small in 1932, and it currently contains only two species: Calycanthus occidentalis (western sweetshrub) and Calycanthus californicus (eastern sweetshrub). These plants are deciduous shrubs or small trees that produce showy, fragrant flowers in the spring. They are found in moist, subtropical forests on the Hawaiian Islands, where they grow in well-drained soils and receive partial shade.
