Discovering Mokpo: A Hidden Gem in North Korea
Mokpo (also spelled Mokp'o or Mongp'o) is a city located in the western part of North Korea, along the Yellow Sea. It is the capital of South Hwanghae Province and has a population of around 200,000 people.
Mokpo has a long history dating back to the Goguryeo dynasty (37 BC - 668 AD), and it was an important port city during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Today, Mokpo is a major industrial center and a transportation hub for North Korea, with a large seaport and a railroad connecting it to Pyongyang and other parts of the country.
Mokpo is also known for its traditional Korean culture, including its folk music and dance, and its local cuisine, which features dishes such as "mokpo-style" naengmyeon (cold noodles) and "mokpo-style" bindaetteok (pancake). The city is also home to several historic sites and landmarks, such as the Mokpo Fortress and the Songgwangsa Temple.
