R. Lee Ermey was an American actor, former Marine, and Vietnam War veteran. He was best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 film "Full Metal Jacket," directed by Stanley Kubrick. Ermey served in the Marine Corps for 11 years, including a tour in Vietnam, where he was wounded in combat. After being discharged from the military, he worked as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego before pursuing a career in acting. In addition to "Full Metal Jacket," some of his other notable roles include "Apocalypse Now," "The Boys in Company C," and "Sea of Love."
Ermey was also known for his distinctive voice and mannerisms, which he brought to many of his roles. He had a deep, gravelly voice and a tough, no-nonsense demeanor that made him a memorable presence on screen. He was also known for his conservative political views and his support for the military and veterans. Ermey passed away in 2018 at the age of 74.
