Uncovering the Rich History of Abdera and its Inhabitants, the Abderites
Abdera was a city in Thrace, and the name "Abderite" (Greek: Ἀβδηρίτης) was given to its inhabitants. The name is derived from the Greek words "abdere", meaning "to sink" or "to drown", and "ites", meaning "people".
In Greek mythology, Abderus was a son of King Lycomedes of Scyros, who was killed by the hero Theseus during the expulsion of the Minotaurs from Crete. According to some sources, Abderus was a companion of Heracles (Hercules) and participated in his adventures.
The name "Abderite" is also associated with a type of ancient Greek vase painting, known as the "Abderite style", which features a distinctive use of red and black colors and bold, geometric shapes.
