Understanding Alto in Music
In music, "alto" refers to a vocal or instrumental range that is lower than the soprano range but higher than the tenor range. Alto voices and instruments typically sing or play in the range of A below middle C to F above middle C.
In a choir or ensemble, the altos typically sing the harmony part, which is the lower-pitched part of the three-part harmony (soprano, alto, tenor). The alto line provides the foundation for the harmony and helps to create a rich and full sound.
In some cases, the term "alto" can also be used to describe a specific type of instrument, such as an alto saxophone or an alto flute. These instruments are designed to produce a lower pitched sound than other types of saxophones or flutes.
