Instancy is a term used in linguistics to describe the instantaneous or immediate nature of certain verbs, adjectives, or other lexical items. These words and phrases convey a sense of timelessness or a lack of duration, suggesting that the action or state they describe happens suddenly, without any intervening period or delay.

For example, the verb "explode" is an instance word because it implies a sudden and rapid expansion or release of energy, with no hint of gradual buildup or transition. Similarly, adjectives like "instant" or "immediate" convey a sense of something happening right away, without any delay or waiting period.

The opposite of instancy is duration, which refers to the amount of time that something takes to happen or be accomplished. Verbs and phrases that convey duration are often used to describe actions or states that unfold over a longer period of time, such as "gradually," "progressively," or "step by step."
