Understanding Peritrophic Structures in Biology
Peritrophic means "surrounding the troph" (troph = nourishment). In biology, it refers to a substance or structure that surrounds and protects the nutrient-rich material in an organism's digestive system. The peritrophic membrane, for example, is a thin layer of tissue that lines the cavity of some invertebrates' digestive systems and helps to filter out waste products and pathogens from the ingested food.
