Understanding Superincumbency in Political Elections
Superincumbency refers to a situation where one or more candidates are running for the same political office, and one of them has already held that office in the past. In this case, the incumbent (the person currently holding the office) is seeking re-election, while one or more challengers are trying to unseat them.
For example, if a current mayor is running for re-election, and one or more other candidates are also running for the same office, then there is a superincumbence situation. The current mayor is the incumbent, and the other candidates are challenging them for the seat.
