Understanding Talukas in Gujarat: Administration, Responsibilities, and Culture

A taluka is an administrative division of a district in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is the second-level administrative unit after the district and is further divided into villages. The word "taluka" is derived from the Sanskrit word "talika," which means "a small tax."

Taluka is responsible for implementing government schemes, maintaining law and order, and providing basic amenities like roads, schools, and healthcare facilities to the people living within its boundaries. Each taluka has a taluka panchayat, which is an elected body of village representatives who oversee the administration of the taluka.

In Gujarat, there are currently 25 districts, each divided into several talukas. For example, Ahmedabad district is divided into 17 talukas, while Surat district is divided into 13 talukas. Each taluka has its own unique identity and culture, and the people living within its boundaries are known as "taluka residents."
