Understanding the Function and Structure of Costae in the Human Body
Costae (singular: costa) are the bony plates that make up the rib cage in the human body. There are 12 pairs of costae, which are numbered from 1 to 12, with the first seven pairs being true ribs and the last five pairs being false ribs. The costae are attached to the spine and the sternum, and they provide protection for the organs in the chest cavity, such as the heart and lungs. They also help to maintain the shape of the chest cavity and play a role in breathing and movement.
