Weihaiwei: A Leased Territory of the Qing Dynasty with a Rich History
Weihaiwei (also known as Wei-hai-wei) was a leased territory of the Qing dynasty in Shandong Province, China. It was leased to the United Kingdom in 1898 and remained under British control until 1930.
During its time under British control, Weihaiwei was developed as a major naval base and commercial center. The port of Weihaiwei was one of the largest in China and was an important stopover for ships traveling between Europe and Japan. The city also became a center for Christian missionary activity and education.
Weihaiwei was returned to China in 1930, and today it is known as Weihai City. The city still retains many of its colonial-era buildings and landmarks, and it is a popular tourist destination in Shandong Province.
