What does it mean to be a runner-up?
The term "runners-up" refers to the individuals or teams that finish in second place, behind the winner. In other words, they are the ones who come closest to winning but do not actually win.
For example, if a sports team wins a championship game, the team that loses the game and finishes in second place would be considered the runners-up. Similarly, if a person wins a contest or competition, the individuals who finish in second and third place would be considered the runners-up.
