What is a Gravida? Understanding the Medical Term for Pregnant Women
Gravida is a medical term used to describe a pregnant woman. The word comes from the Latin word "gravis," meaning "heavy," and was originally used to describe a woman who was carrying a heavy burden, i.e., a pregnancy.
In obstetrics, the term gravida is used to classify a pregnant woman based on the number of times she has been pregnant. For example, a woman who is pregnant for the first time is called a gravida 1, while a woman who has been pregnant twice is called a gravida 2, and so on.
The term gravidae is the plural form of gravida, and it refers to multiple pregnancies. So, if a woman is carrying twins or triplets, she would be considered a gravidae 2, for example.
