What is a Picul? Understanding the Historical Unit of Measurement for Rice in the Philippines and Southeast Asia
Piculs (also spelled picul or pickul) is a unit of measurement that was historically used in the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia to measure the volume of rice. It is defined as the volume of a basket or container that can hold one cavan (a unit of weight) of unhusked rice.
The size of a picul can vary depending on the location and the type of rice being measured, but it is generally equivalent to about 25-30 kilograms (55-66 pounds) of unhusked rice. In modern times, the picul has been replaced by more standardized units of measurement, such as the metric ton.
