What is a Postulant in Religion?
A postulant is someone who has applied to become a member of a religious order or congregation, but has not yet been accepted as a full member. During the period of postulation, the individual undergoes a period of formation and discernment, during which they learn about the life and spirituality of the community, and determine whether they are truly called to this way of life.
In some religious traditions, postulants may wear a specific habit or clothing that distinguishes them from full members of the community, and they may participate in certain aspects of the community's life and worship, but they do not have all the rights and responsibilities of full membership. Ultimately, if the postulant decides to continue their application, they will make first vows and become a novice, which is the beginning of their formal formation as a member of the religious order or congregation.
