What is Indehiscent?
Indehiscent refers to a flower or fruit that does not open or split along a predetermined line, unlike dehiscent flowers or fruits which do open or split along a predetermined line.
In other words, indehiscent flowers or fruits remain closed and do not split open to release their contents, whereas dehiscent flowers or fruits open or split open to release their contents.
Examples of indehiscent flowers or fruits include:
* Closed buds that do not open to release their petals or sepals
* Fruits that do not split open to release their seeds, such as berries or drupes
* Seeds that are enclosed in a hard, impermeable covering and cannot be released until the fruit or pod is broken open.
In contrast, examples of dehiscent flowers or fruits include:
* Opening buds that release their petals or sepals
* Fruits that split open to release their seeds, such as capsules or follicles
* Seeds that are exposed and can be easily dispersed when the fruit or pod opens.
