World Meteorological Organization (WMO) - Promoting Weather and Climate Knowledge Sharing and Cooperation
WMO stands for World Meteorological Organization. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations and is the main international organization responsible for meteorology (weather and climate) and related sciences. The WMO's main objective is to promote the free exchange of information and cooperation in the field of meteorology, as well as to support the development of meteorological services and the protection of life and property from the effects of weather and climate.
The WMO has 193 member countries and has a number of responsibilities, including:
* Coordinating international efforts to monitor and predict weather and climate conditions
* Setting standards for meteorological observations and forecasting methods
* Providing technical assistance and training to developing countries to help them improve their meteorological services
* Promoting the use of satellite data and other advanced technologies in meteorology
* Supporting research into the causes and effects of climate change
The WMO also plays a key role in coordinating international responses to extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, droughts, and floods. It works closely with other UN agencies, such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), to help countries prepare for and respond to these types of events.
