Sulphuryl: A Versatile Precursor to Sulfur-Containing Compounds

Sulphuryl (or sulfuryl) is a chemical compound that contains the sulfur atom bonded to three oxygen atoms (-SO3). It is commonly used as a precursor to other sulfur-containing compounds, such as sulfuric acid and sulfates.

Sulphuryl can be produced by the reaction of sulfur dioxide with water or an alkali hydroxide solution:

SO2 + H2O → SO3 + 2H+

or

SO2 + 2NaOH → Na2SO4 + 2H2O

It is a strong acid and can react with bases to form salts, such as sodium sulfate:

Na2SO4 + 2H2O → Na2SO4·2H2O (sodium sulfate pentahydrate)

Sulphuryl is also used in the production of detergents, fertilizers, and other chemical products.
