The History of Bagnios: Small Houses for Servants and Their Uses
BAGNIOS. A name given to certain small, detached houses or cottages, which were formerly built in the gardens of the nobility and gentry, for the accommodation of their domestic servants. These buildings were usually placed at a distance from the main house, and were occupied by the gardeners, gamekeepers, and other inferior domestics. The name is derived from the French word bagnio, which signifies a little house or hut.
In modern times, the term bagnios has been applied to any small, detached building used for a particular purpose, such as a tool shed or a storage room.
