Uncovering the History of Strigiles: Ancient Roman Skin Scrapers
Strigiles (plural of strigil) were ancient Roman instruments used for scraping dirt and sweat from the skin, particularly after exercising or engaging in physical labor. They were typically made of metal, such as bronze or iron, and had a flat or curved blade attached to a handle. The strigil was used in conjunction with a water basin (known as a lava) to clean the body after bathing.
