Uncovering the Lost Town of Anaces in Turkey

Anaces (Anacis) was a town of ancient Phrygia, mentioned by Strabo and Pliny the Elder. It is believed to have been located near the modern village of Kırka, in the province of Niğde, Turkey.

The name "Anaces" is derived from the Greek word "anakysis," which means "returning." This name may refer to the fact that the town was founded by colonists who returned to their ancestral homeland after living elsewhere.

Strabo and Pliny the Elder provide brief descriptions of Anaces, indicating that it was a small town with a temple dedicated to the Phrygian goddess Cybele. The town was also known for its hot springs, which were considered to have healing properties.

Today, there are no remains of Anaces visible above ground, but the site is believed to be located beneath the modern village of Kırka. Archaeological excavations have uncovered some artifacts from the ancient town, including pottery and coins, which are now housed in local museums.
