Understanding Chiliastic Eschatology: A Thousand Years of Peace and Righteousness
Chiliastic comes from the Greek word "chilias" which means "thousand". In Christian eschatology, chiliasm refers to a millenarian belief that Jesus will return at the end of the world and establish a thousand-year reign of peace and righteousness. This belief is based on Revelation 20:1-6, where it is written that Satan will be bound for a thousand years, allowing for a period of peace and prosperity before the final judgment.
Chiliastic eschatology is often associated with premillennialism, which holds that Jesus' return will occur before the millennium, and postmillennialism, which holds that Jesus' return will occur at the end of the millennium. However, not all chiliasts hold to these views, and some believe in a literal thousand-year reign on earth.
The term "chiliastic" is used to describe any belief or theory that is based on the idea of a thousand-year reign of Christ. It is often used critically to refer to what are seen as extreme or fanatical interpretations of biblical prophecy.
