Understanding Diverticular Disease: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Diverticulosis is a condition where small pouches or sacs form in the wall of the colon (large intestine). These pouches are called diverticula. They can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel movements.
Diverticulitis is a more serious complication of diverticulosis, where the diverticula become inflamed and can cause fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal tenderness. In severe cases, diverticulitis can lead to perforation of the colon, which can be life-threatening.
Diverticular disease is common, especially among older adults. It is thought to be caused by a combination of factors such as age-related weakening of the colon wall, high pressure inside the colon, and a low-fiber diet. Treatment for diverticulosis and diverticulitis usually involves antibiotics and changes in diet to promote healing and prevent further complications. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair any damage to the colon.
