


Understanding Pigmentation: Types, Causes, and Treatment Options
Pigmentation refers to the presence of coloring agents in the skin, hair or eyes. These coloring agents are called pigments and they determine the color of our skin, hair and eyes. Pigmentation can be influenced by genetics, exposure to the sun, hormonal changes and other factors.
There are different types of pigmentation, including:
1. Melanin : It is the most common type of pigmentation and it is responsible for the color of our skin, hair and eyes. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes and it helps protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
2. Carotenemia : It is a condition where the skin takes on an orange or yellowish hue due to the consumption of foods rich in beta-carotene, such as carrots, sweet potatoes and squash.
3. Vitiligo : It is a condition where the skin loses its pigmentation, resulting in white patches.
4. Freckles : They are small, brown spots that appear on the skin as a result of exposure to the sun.
5. Age spots : Also known as liver spots, they are flat, brown or black spots that can appear on the skin as we age.
6. Sun spots : They are similar to age spots but they are caused by exposure to the sun rather than aging.
7. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) : It is a condition where the skin becomes darker after an inflammation or injury.
8. Melasma : It is a hormonal condition that causes brown patches to appear on the skin, particularly in women during pregnancy or when taking hormone replacement therapy.
9. Poikiloderma of Civatte : It is a condition where the skin takes on a reddish-brown color due to the accumulation of pigment in the dermis.
10. Pigmented lesions : They are abnormal growths of skin cells that can be darker or lighter than the surrounding skin.
It's important to note that some types of pigmentation, such as melasma and PIH, can be caused by hormonal changes or inflammation, so it's important to consult a dermatologist if you notice any changes in your skin's pigmentation.
