Wonsan: A City Rich in History and Resources

Wonsan (Korean: 원산; MR: Wonsan) is a city located in the Kangwon Province of North Korea. It is situated on the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula, approximately 120 kilometers north of the capital city of Pyongyang. The city has a population of around 250,000 people and is known for its rich mineral resources, including coal, iron, and magnesite.

Wonsan has a long history dating back to the Goguryeo dynasty (37 BC – 668 AD), and it was an important port city during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Today, Wonsan is a major industrial center in North Korea, with a number of factories and mines located in and around the city. The city is also home to several cultural attractions, including the Wonsan Museum and the Songdowon International Children's Camp.

Wonsan has been the site of significant economic development efforts by the North Korean government in recent years, particularly in the areas of mining and heavy industry. In 2018, the government announced plans to develop the city into a major hub for tourism and foreign investment, with the goal of attracting up to 10 million visitors per year by 2025. However, these plans have been largely put on hold due to international sanctions and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
