Somali Birr: History, Divisions, and Exchange Rate
Birr (plural: birr) is the official currency of Somalia. It was introduced in 1962, replacing the Somali shilling. The name "birr" comes from the Arabic word "biryani," which means "money."
The birr is divided into 100 santim, and there are coins for 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 birr, as well as banknotes for 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 birr.
The value of the birr has fluctuated over the years due to political instability and economic factors. In recent years, the exchange rate has been around 1 USD = 6,000-7,000 SOMALI BIRR (SB).
