Understanding Diplocardia: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Diplocardia is a rare congenital heart defect that occurs when the two lower chambers of the heart, the right and left ventricles, do not properly connect to the pulmonary artery and aorta. This can lead to oxygen-poor blood being pumped into the body, and can cause a range of symptoms including fatigue, shortness of breath, and blue tint to the skin.
Diplocardia is typically diagnosed through echocardiography, which uses sound waves to create images of the heart. Treatment for diplocardia usually involves surgery to repair the defect, and may involve the use of a shunt or other device to help direct blood flow properly. In some cases, medications such as beta blockers may be used to help manage symptoms. With proper treatment, many people with diplocardia can lead active and fulfilling lives.
