Understanding Midrange Frequencies in Audio Equalization
"Mids" is short for "mid-range frequencies". In audio, the mid-range refers to the frequency range of approximately 500 Hz to 8000 Hz. This range includes many of the frequencies that are important for human speech and music, and is often referred to as the "critical band" of frequencies.
In the context of equalization, a midrange boost or cut refers to adjusting the gain of frequencies within this range. For example, if you want to emphasize the clarity of a vocal track, you might boost the midrange frequencies to bring out the details of the voice. On the other hand, if you want to reduce the amount of muddiness in a mix, you might cut the midrange frequencies to reduce the amount of competing frequencies.
