Understanding the Biceps Muscle: Function, Anatomy, and Exercise Tips
The biceps (short for biceps brachii) is a muscle located in the upper arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow. It has two heads, one on the front of the shoulder and one on the back of the shoulder, which merge into a single tendon that attaches to the elbow.
The biceps is responsible for flexion (bending) of the elbow and forearm, as well as supination (rotation of the forearm so that the palmar surface faces upwards). It also helps to stabilize the shoulder joint and maintain proper posture.
In addition to its functional role, the biceps is a prominent muscle that can be easily visible under the skin, especially in people with a slender build or who have developed a large biceps through exercise. As such, it has become a popular target for bodybuilders and weightlifters looking to develop their arms.
